Home Oxygen Therapy: A Practical Guide for Families

6 min read

Concentrator or cylinder? How many litres? What safety rules matter? Everything caregivers should know.

Concentrator vs cylinder

A concentrator makes oxygen from room air and never needs refilling, but requires electricity. A cylinder works without power and is ideal as backup or for travel. Many families keep both.

Choosing capacity

Prescriptions below 5 litres per minute suit a 5L concentrator. Higher flow requirements or two patients need a 10L unit. Always follow the flow rate your doctor prescribed.

Safety essentials

Keep the unit at least two metres from flames, gas stoves and heaters. Never smoke near oxygen. Position the concentrator with 30 cm clearance around it for airflow.

Daily maintenance

Rinse the humidifier bottle daily with clean water, wash the sponge filter weekly and replace the nasal cannula every two weeks.

Monitoring the patient

Use a pulse oximeter to track SpO₂. Report readings persistently below the target your doctor set, or new confusion and breathlessness, immediately.
